Question Question about freebsd-upgrade

Hello.

Earlier today I tried to enter the classic upgrade command "freebsd-upgrade" and I got an unexpected response. Well, it was unexpected to me. It may be standard procedure for all I know. But the specifics:

Code:
:] freebsd-update fetch

    src component not installed, skipped
freebsd-update: Cannot upgrade from a version that is not a release
(including alpha, beta and release candidates)
using freebsd-update. Instead, FreeBSD can be directly
upgraded by source or upgraded to a RELEASE/RELENG version
    prior to running freebsd-update.
    Currently running: 13.0-STABLE
It sounds like my version of FreeBSD, a "stable" version, isn't liked by this command. Is that true? And if so, what should I plan on doing?

I thought "stable" versions were considered Okay. What the heck? Anyway, I don't know if anything is my system needs upgrading or updating today and now, but sooner or later it will. So I thought I would inquire.

Thanks in advance,
RJPugh

No, STABLE is sort of a work in progress. Fred Cash wrote a good description of the differences and let me put it up on my site at https://srobb.net/release.html

Even though it's for much older versions, the descriptions are still accurate. The freebsd-update program only works with RELEASE.

scottro,

Thank you for posting that link I really found it quite helpful because even though I do consider myself some what of an authority on FreeBSD. I'm always open to both admitting that the prior attitude doesn't get you really far and that if I claim to be a life long learner and close my mind to other peoples perspective and approaches no one will want to be around me weather electronic or in person and I'll be a very lonely person.
