Hardware for embedded FreeBSD/OpenBSD custom router/firewall ( Ent. firewall, ADSL ro
Hello.
I am investigating these days the possibility of embedding FreeBSD/OpenBSD in hardware like ADSL Modem (modem adsl ) , or firewall dedicated hardware. So my questions are:
Thank you. |

Possibly a Raspberry Pi, many do use as such systems....on Linux, but they do have some BSD versions of the O/S.

There are many hardware appliances from pfsence/opensense. You can also look at the pcengines boards, even they are discontinued.

According to the youtube video linked below¹, the fujitsu s920 is a good machine which can be converted very cheaply into a router with an ethernet card. All for less than 70€ or even cheaper if you strike a good deal on the second hand market.
On it you can install OpenWRT, OPNSense, IPFire or VyOS. [1]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAxe2pAUY50 |

Some hardware suggestions here:
https://openbsdrouterguide.net/ Don't bother with FreeBSD, pf(4) is the gold standard for firewalls and only OpenBSD gets the latest version. |

For low power arm64 options, Banana Pi makes a series of dedicated router boards including one with a Rockchip RK3568. Per per page, this should be supported.
OpenBSD Arm64 support https://wiki.banana-pi.org/Banana_Pi_BPI-R2_Pro There is a bootlog of OpenBSD running on an older Banana Pi R1 but searches for R2's came up empty. This would be theoretically possible but you would be breaking new ground. I looked at this and there are cases/power supplies available. My paranoia/security needs are real but not astronomical. I ended with OpenWRT on a MediaTek MTK7621 based Linksys EA7300. I found a factory refurbished one for ~$40USD and have been happy with it. FreeBSD does have a dedicated router project which relies on a separate firewall. The forums resident Network security and routing, expert @jggimi, has advocated for a separate firewall in the past.
