Someone else has posted about this problem to the misc@ mailing list, after seeing your thread, stanl.

The problem appears for him in the RAMDISK kernel (bsd.rd), not in either GENERIC or GENERIC.MP, and through snapshot histories he has determined a last-known-good snapshot.
