zfs backups

Any reason I can not just tar a zfs pool to tape or a snapshot of it ?
Just wondering on the best approach to back it up to tape.
I have a simple mirror running with a hot spare added but still need backups done nightly

You can't use tar/dump to backup a pool, as there's no device exported to do that with.

You can use tar to backup a filesystem, though, same as with any filesystem. Same with a snapshot.

Or, you can send a snapshot to another system running ZFS to create an off-server/off-site copy.

Yea I see what you mean about the pool I must been having a blond moment there
