I've tried to get some help on the Wine forum, but so far not so good. I've been googling too...
I've placed the Chromesetup.exe in my .wine/drive_c directory. I've set .wine in my env as wineprefix. I'm runnng 1.1.8.1 However, if I run wine ChromeSetup.exe, I'm returned: wine: could not load L"C:\\ChromeSetup.exe": Invalid address similar goes for Firefox |

First, I would say update Wine. 1.1.8 is pretty old and I believe that particular version had a regression in it that caused "Invalid address" errors.
Also, you should use the standalone installer for Chrome. The installer that downloads Chrome doesn't work. You can get the standalone installer here: http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?standalone=1. You can save the exe anywhere. Run: $ winecfg and set your Windows version to Windows XP. Then run: $ wine /path/to/ChromeSetup_172_28.exe (ChromeSetup_172_28.exe is the current version...it may change) Same goes for Firefox. They both work pretty well for me on FreeBSD 7.2 with Wine 1.1.23 (Wine 1.1.25 is out, but I haven't had a chance to update). |

I'm a pretty big *nix newbie - first post here, actually, after a friend recommended it as a place with a lotta info - but I thought that FF and Chrome both had versions that could be installed without needing WINE?
I'm probably mistaken, but in case I'm not, is there an advantage to using WINE instead? |
