Formatting fat32 drive quickly
is there a way to format fat32 drives quickly under FreeBSD?
I'm formatting a 1TB drive under BSD and it's taking forever. I'm just using the command: 'newfs_msdos /dev/da0s1' and my drive is on USB 2.0. |

Can fat32 be used for a 1TB volume?

I think he mean 1GB not TB. See - it is a flash drive.

Theoretically FAT32 supports 2TB volumes, and a max 4GB file size... FreeBSD's newfs_msdos has no fast format option.
Personally, neither FAT32 or NTFS are a good option... |

I meant 1TB, it's a 1TB seagate sata HD in a USB caddy.
I have to format it as either fat32 or ext3 for a media player device. I choose fat32 as i want to easily transfer files from a windows box. Currently it takes 33minutes to format the 1TB drive and I'm reformatting it many times at different sizes to test out a bug in the media player. |

Well, I doubt it would be worth it unless you really want to bother with it.
Windows XP has a quick format option for FAT32, limited to like 30~60 some GB. GNU Parted via a LiveCD or Linux installation can then grow the partition larger, probably to the size you need.

The largest partitions sizes I've used with Windows (XP SP2) have been in the 80-120GB range, 1TB... Only GOD and Microsoft would know without trying it.
Any compliant implementation should work with a FAT32 volume of any legal size, shouldn't it?

There are ext2/3 drivers for windows available. They've never failed for me, anyway.
