I installed a fresh new system and ran pkg_add -r cvsup, and it depended on all these X11 libraries. I like to have the bare minimum set of packages on a system, and it really gets on my nerves when a package installs more than it needs. Why does cvsup depend on all these X11 libraries?

There is a GUI with cvsup. If you don't want it, install cvsup-without-gui. Then none of the X11 stuff will be installed.

But yes, csup would be better, it's a rewrite of CVSup in C, and compatible with CVSup. See csup(1) for more information.

Is there an advantage to using cvsup or csup over portsnap?

Oh duh, I forgot about that package, thanks. And to the question above, portsnap only syncs the ports tree, not its sources. Csup and cvsup syncs the sources and csup is a rewrite of cvsup in C, so its faster and not interpreted.
