Hi folks,
I got this Asus L2100 but very little works: wifi is off (had to use a dongle); fn keyboards do not work; therefore the screen backlight brightness does not work out of the box; among all the current issue this is the first issue I would solve. I could not find any xbacklight package not sure if this is handled by xenocara. I am very sad to evaluate this hardware doesn't play nicely with OpenBSD, and this is a shame since I would not use anything but OpenBSD for a desktop use. Thanks F. That doesn't really tell us anything at all about the hardware. I tried to search for that model but I'm not having much luck, perhaps because of regional product type variations.
Absolute identifying information can be provided in the form of your complete dmesg(8) output on that machine. Either post it here directly (using code tags) or upload the output to https://dmesgd.nycbug.org and share a link here. The latter approach is probably best because it makes the information available to the wider community. |

If Function keys don't work, try using the Esc key & a Number key together.

Here is a teardown video of a similiar model:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnwHBQE5v40 The video describes an AzureWave wifi card which appears to be a rebranded Broadcom card with bluetooth: Installing 3rd party AzureWave driver on Ubuntu According to the video, you can swap out the cards. I did this on an HP Stream14 114w which whitelists hardware. Was able to get a used HP branded 7265ac card off Ebay for $8. Case opening looks easy and there is an option to add an NVMe drive. I wonder if is it worth to give a try with 7.2-current...
![]() If the hardware support is poor is nobody fault, it is just what it is, probably I had better to move on Linux until better time... ![]() |

In respect of the backlight keys it should be possible to set up a custom keybind to call wsconsctl(8) & change display.brightness.

Have a look at this old thread: https://daemonforums.org/showthread.php?t=10177
I've had to deal with a few old, cheap and nasty Acer and Asus craptops where the backlight resisted all attempts to control it under either FreeBSD or OpenBSD. I eventually got working backlight control on one of them with Linux. wsconsctl(8) display.brightness won't affect the backlight at all. Most likely the backlight controls were designed around some crapware utility ms windows power management software/drivers. I would spare yourself all the grief (not to mention your eyes) and see if a Linux distro provides working backlight controls. |

Hi guys, thanks to each and all of you!
![]() Good news the brightness control works through "wsconsctl" therefore my big deal-breaker is solved. I can work with the Crapbook this way, hopefully it will go better in the future! ![]() For curiosity I tested also Nomad which is quite close to FreeBSD and the touchpad didn't work, the WiFi wasn't recognized at all but the FN keys work... ![]() I am fine with this installation, isn't perfect but usable! I won't waste my time testing Linux then... ![]() Last edited by Freezr; 12th October 2022 at 07:36 PM. |
