There's not enough information in your post to help you further. I'm just someone on the internet ... I can't see over your shoulder.

More information would help. Such as, which of the 4 scenarios in the FAQ would be your preference? How is your guest network provisioned? (It needs to be able to connect using VirtIO to the host OpenBSD system.) What did you try? What were the results? What tests did you perform?

Just to follow up...I'm not a Linux user. Not at all. But I have previously tested Alpine Linux in a vmm(4) virtual machine, using the second scenario in the FAQ -- local networking plus NAT to permit the guest to reach other networks, such as the internet. I installed using the "VIRTUAL" .iso image download. This worked fine for me. So one of these are likely to be your problem:
  1. Your Linux guest is not provisioned to support VirtIO.
  2. You've incorrectly configured the guest's networking environment.
  3. You've incorrectly configured the hypervisor services for the guest in vm.conf(5) or with vmctl(8).
  4. You've incorrectly provisioned networking on the host.
  5. If vmd(8) and your guest OS won't run at all -- a possibility because you haven't actually defined the scope of the problem -- perhaps your hardware platform doesn't have hardware-assisted virtualization capabilities or the feature is disabled in BIOS.

I have had pretty good luck getting Debian and Ubuntu vm's working on OpenBSD by creating the vm's on a Linux box, and moving them to OpenBSD after install. This can be done using Gnome-Boxes (Simplest way), Virt-Manager (Almost as simple), or Libvirt (Simple but command line).I haven't tried this with Alpine, but assume it wouldn't be much different.

This might not be the solution you wanted, but it has saved me tons of time fighting with installers.
