*BSD General section

Hello,

May I suggest a new section for *BSD General topics. That is, those topics that are general to UNIX and don't necessarily correspond to any one BSD flavor.

According to the description of that forum, it is for "Any other flavour of BSD that does not have a section of its own."

To me that implies discussing DragonFly BSD, PC-BSD, etc. - but not just general UNIX topics.

There may be some overlap in there, but nothing that actually fits. For example - shell scripting, sed, awk might fit in programming. But talking about system administration (i.e., changing file permissions), using various shells (aside from scripting usage), effective usage of general commands (i.e., more, less, piping, redirection, " vs. ' vs. `, etc.), security, networking, using text editors, etc.

For some reason the words Keep It Simple, Stupid come to my mind.


Most people when they post will likely be using one form of BSD or another, so I think FooBSD General makes sense.

Even if you abstract into general topics of 'networking, programming' etc you basically include ALL BSD systems. For programming and (most) server apps I can understand, since much of the specifics are lesser so.

I.e. OpenBSD comes with Perl in the base, FreeBSD doesn't, but writing a perl script is mostly the same on any of the BSDs. And configuring sendmail is mostly just sendmail.


The one thing I do like, on BSD you always know where in the universe to look for stuff and it usually is organized !!!
