KDE wont start up

oh god.

2 power outages today.. hard drive was on the fritz but it finally started up and stayed up for 6 hours. i rebooted a little bit ago and now it's not loading.

i was getting
/usr was not properly dismounted
/var was not properly dismounted

but i fyck /usr
fyck /var

and rebooted and that went away. There is valuable files I NEED to recover.. is anyone has anyway I can get them on my flash drive that would be amazing... even if i will have to reformat.

What errors are you getting when you attempt to start X/KDE?

None, when I type startx it goes to that default desktop as if KDE isn't installed, but it doesn't load any of the terminals or anything, just the grey background.

Try xinit and then startkde? Could just be a loss of whatever file X stores it's startup commands in.

Don't know if that file's disappearance would keep the term window from appearing in xinit as well...

Alright, first im doing a repair of the file system and then if that doesn't work I'll go with the above^

Okay, completed the repair of the file system.. ran "xinit" and the GUI loaded up fine.

now.. am I wrong if I asked if 'xinit' is the same thing as 'startx'?

I think xinit just initializes X (go figure, eh?) while startx loads up a window manager as well.

So either startx runs a different config file, or it loads a config file that xinit doesn't have?

Not running FreeBSD at the moment (axed it because Vista refused to be on the second partition. Will probably be reinstalling soon in a dual boot.) and I'm quite rusty with X. Embarrassingly so!
