I've been using OpenBSD for five or six years, as my primary home OS, as a web server (in production! for money!), and as a Subversion repository server.
And I confess. I have *never* gotten a printer to work. I use Windows to do that. I have tried CUPS. I have tried LPD. I have tried apsfilter. I have tried foomatic. I have tried smbclient to Windows XP. And all of them, in their documentation, have left me with the impression that there is something very important to printing that the authors assume that I understand perfectly and therefore do not need to discuss. Help. |

And yes, I have read man printcap, man lp, man lpd. Perhaps I shall read them drunk next.

OK, you've almost given me another instance of the supposition: how DOES one set up CUPS so that it does something (other be depended on by freerdp)?
I did not really want to buy another printer, if only due to real-estate considerations. |

What kind of printer do you have?
Edit: nevermind, I searched the misc archives. Did you search http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi?make=HP like Stefan suggested? Is your OfficeJet supported? Last edited by rocket357; 29th December 2010 at 04:39 PM. |

I don't see where Stefan suggested this, but as it happens the 5510v is not. My alternate right now is a Canon BJC-1000 which is Mostly.
I'd consider using this as an excuse to buy a network printer, but my level of befuddlement is so high I'm not even sure about that. |

Ahh, yeah, the discussion took place early morning, and Stefan's response was 9 or so hours later.
I'm not going to make any suggestions here (other than, "perhaps other members here can give you better advice") since my experience is strictly with a very expensive network attached enterprise printer, which I certainly wouldn't offer as a suggested "fix". |

In this day and age one would rely on laserprinters which understand networking and PS, so I suspect that's why it doesn't get much attention.
For those of us stuck with inkjets: I have had great success with CUPS and HPIJS (which was broken on 4.7), since 4.3, for an officejet G55 and K550. |

I used to use CUPS but switched to lpr/lpd after having a problem with spooling that could not be diagnosed with any tool at my disposal. I now prefer it.
My printer is a cheap HP inkjet attached via USB, and I use hpijs with foomatic filters. |

OK, HOW do you use hpijs with foomatic? Again, I am missing something Very Significant, but I don't know what it is.

For me, hpijs contains nothing of interest but a single gzipped .ppd file for my printer.
I unpacked it, stuck it somewhere, and addressed it in the printcap file, like so: Code:
lp|myhp:\ :lp=/dev/ulpt0:\ :af=/etc/foomatic/myhp.ppd:\ :if=/usr/local/bin/foomatic-rip:\ :sd=/var/spool/output:\ :lf=/var/log/lpd-errs: |

here is another discussion about printing on OpenBSD that helped me :
