I had not heard about this before now. Seems very scary, it is reminiscent of the Dark Souls 3 exploit which is using the anti-cheat software (Ring 0) to mess with your computer.

The really funny thing is that the exploit was effected using the anti-cheat system (EAC) and the system has just been ported to WINE...
This is why I stick to Counter Strike — their anti-cheat may be useless but at least it can't get you pwned. EDIT: Happy Birthday LeFrettchen!

The games industry is now afflicted by the same disease as the film industry. There is little innovation, nothing really revolutionary, lots of "safe" sequels, releases are rushed out riddled with bugs and greed has taken over, with downloadable content being sold within the games themselves. You will only see more and more of this kind of thing as it can't get any better with the current status quo. The programmers themselves no longer have any control, the likes of Microsoft have bought many of the big names and have control of the PC platform and a big part of the console platform as well. Many developers can make more profit from some ad strewn, fruit machine style, Android or iOS game, than devloping some larger, much longer term undertaking for the PC or consoles.
If you take Epic Games as an example, they took down the servers for the Unreal Tournament series and refocused on Fortnite, which is a FPS shooter aimed at kids and played by kids in spite of any age rating. They also cancelled UT4 and then U turned on their plan to make UT3 free to play. In other words the priority is lowest common denominator crap. The Proton version of Epic's Anti-Cheat is actually user level but that just leaves us at https://xkcd.com/1200/
