Yes. You can host web pages on your own server at home if your ISP allows it. For example, ATT does but Charter does not.

There are a number of free hosting services. Some better than others. Brinkster, I hear, is pretty good but I don't recall if it's Windows only stuff.

Most free services limit disk space and bandwidth so if you get a lot of traffic or have a lot of images you could run into a monthly shutdown. Also, some free services tend to add markup to the beginning of your page which screws things up when you try and write modern markup to current standards.

Paid hosting, however, is cheap and can be very good. You can get it for less than $10 a month.

Wrong forum. This has nothing to do with OpenBSD.

Minimum requirements:
  1. A computer.
  2. Electricity.
  3. An operating system.
  4. A webserver application.
  5. An Internet connection.
The operating system and the webserver application might be free. The rest will usually have costs associated with them.

Recommended options:
  1. A domain name.
  2. An internet service provider that does not block port 80.
It is possible to obtain a domain name for free. It is also possible to obtain one, and associated software, that will allow a dynamic IP address to retain the domain name as the address changes.

Suggested options:
  1. A static IP address.
  2. A purpose.

I would add to this list the need to maintain the connection to the Internet responsibly -- which includes:
  • Don't leak packets with non-routable (RFC 1918) addresses to the Internet.
  • Any mail relay used has had the configuration locked down such that it is not surreptitiously (or intentionally) used to propagate spam.
I would highly recommend learning networking before connecting to the Internet. Any mistakes made could adversely effect everyone.

Eh? You mean for running a web service or just any mum connecting to the net to watch YouTube?

While it is true that there are millions of "zombie" Windows PCs that are parts of evil botnets, through a blend of inattention or ignorance, I believe Ocicat was fairly clear -- anyone providing a service on the Internet should strive to do so responsibly.

The fact is, that many fail to do so, and then provide inadvertent open relays, open proxies, and open MTAs that are then used with malice.
