I updated my source tree and did a buildworld and it stills says 7.1-PRERELEASE so I will wait for the mirrors to get updated and try again tomorrow.

what tag did you use? RELENG_7_1_0_RELEASE or RELENG_7_1 or RELENG_7? Only the first two will show 7.1-RELEASE.

I am using RELENG_7, but when I first installed FreeBSD 7.0 stable the output said FreeBSD 7.0-STABLE so I was expecting to see FreeBSD 7.1-STABLE. My thinking is that FreeBSD uses a version/branch syntax to help people quickly see what version is installed and what branch is being followed. Those following "stable" have two descriptions following the pattern:

FreeBSD 7.1-STABLE
FreeBSD 7.2-PRERELEASE
FreeBSD 7.2-STABLE
FreeBSD 7.3-PRERELEASE

FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE
FreeBSD 7.1-BETA#
FreeBSD 7.1-RC#

Incorrect. Those updating via sources will see:

using tag=RELENG_7 will show 7.0-STABLE, then 7.1-PRERELEASE, then eventually 7.1-STABLE (maybe with a 7.1-RELEASE in there).

using tag=RELENG_7_0_RELEASE will show 7.0-RELEASE, and doesn't exist until the release is made.

using tag=RELENG_7_1 will show 7.1-RELEASE-pX (where X goes up with each patch made to the the branch), and doesn't exist until the release is made.

Those updating via CDs/DVDs (maybe freebsd-update, haven't tested) will see 7.1-BETAX when using beta CDs, 7.1-RCX when using RC CDs, and 7.1-RELEASE when using release CDs.

For those of you running 7.1-RELEASE AMD64 do you have a choice of kernels or is the GENERIC an SMP kernel?

I believe the installer has been changed such that if the install kernel detects an SMP system, then it installs an SMP GENERIC, and if it detects a UP system, then it installs a UP GENERIC.

The kernel on the install CD that is used for the install, is a UP kernel, though.

There is no UP kernel anymore since FreeBSD 7.0 release.

You're right. Wow, missed that change completely. Looking through the CVSweb logs, this was changed a long time ago.

I remember when they tried to make the default kernel SMP and the performance was horrible on UP systems, so they switched the installed to install two different kernels, depending on whether the system was SMP or UP. Guess they fixed all the performance issues for running SMP kernels on UP systems.

For me personally it might be worth installing to play around with Dtrace (anyone got a noob guide for that?) but the two features I really want - a truly stable ZFS and virtual networking - probably won't appear until the 8.x releases.
