Linux compat status??
For a long time we have used fc4 for the 2.4.2 compat layer to run Linux applications. There has been quite some work recently for 2.6.16 compatibility (including fc6 and f8). What is the status of these newer layers? Are they stable? Are they worth using over 2.4? Any issues with specific programs?

linux_base-f8 with compat.linux.osrelease=2.6.16 sysctl set is required to use Linux Flash 9 with native Firefox. It's fairly stable. Now and then requires a "killall npviewer.bin" or restart of Firefox, depending on how heavy the Flash is on a site.
I believe they're aiming to make 2.6.16 the default Linux compat version for FreeBSD 8.0.

Any issues with it? I'm using fc6 at the moment (with the appropriate sysctl and flash9), and so far it seems fine, but I'm still setting up the machine. Why f8 as opposed to fc6?

The latest is the greatest ;-) Well more security, less bugs, more compatbility to recent software. It's to some degree a mixed bag, but rather usable imho.

UnrealTournament (games/linux-ut) doesn't work very well with f8/2.6, a few months ago there were lots of graphics glitches, those seem to have gone but now the game slows down sometimes and reacts very sluggish ...
It works fine with fc4/2.4. Never experienced any problems with other applications, and I suspect you probably won't be playing UT, so f8/2.6 will probably work fine for you. But it does indicate that it's not 100% complete yet.

This might sound like a stupid question, but does that old UT actually run properly on a real Fedora 8/Linux 2.6 setup?

I think so, I know a few people running it on Linux systems, mostly Debian though.
