dwindling memory
got a Fbsd 6.3 server that I monitor with Cacti - starting last wednesday, free memory started a downward slide. I've restarted the basic services that the server runs - squid / apache.

That's why I mentioned Cacti - as this server is monitored 24/7 I have a good baseline and this trend is abnormal. Load on the server has not changed. At this rate in another 24hrs it will start swapping to disk.

My top output: Mem: 56M Active, 18M Inact, 155M Wired, 40K Cache, 28M Buf, 753M Free Swap: 5120M Total, 5120M Free Active + Inact + Wired + Cache + Buffered + Free = Total ~ 1GB So correct graph should display more than 2 colors all the time. Last edited by richardpl; 25th August 2008 at 07:02 PM.

What's the trend for Active and Inactive memory during this time?
You can't look at just one or two of the values. You have to compare all of them, over the same time period. They will fluctuate. So long as the total always remains the same, and so long as swap is never touched, you do not have a problem. If the total of all the different mem types increases, and if you start hitting swap, then you have a memory leak you need to track down.

ran portsnap last night, just to force it to utilize the memory for something - seemed to work, Cacti is now showing Free, buffers and cache and has recovered somewhat.
going to keep my eye on it for a while. Code:
