I have a philosophy of being toolkit consistent (gtk v qt) and installing just enough to meet my needs. For general internet facing use, OpenBSD/gtk3 and the scripted install that I've worked out.
Lately, I'm maintaining a second system for CAD/3D Printing. Most CAD software and 3D printing software is qt based so I'm currently running a Debian 12/LXQt desktop with FreeCAD and 2 qt based Slicing programs. My main dislike of Debian is that the default install of LXQt with kwin pulls in KDE Plasma. Even if I pre-install kwin-x11 with --no-recommends. Both have been stable compared to my dated experience with MS Windows. My OpenBSD system occasionally lock's up the keyboard/mouse with GIMP 2.99. When I had more time, the most stable system I ever used was Crux where everything beyond the base install was built from source. The Crux build system allowed me to share the packages with other computers on my network. Last edited by shep; 3 Weeks Ago at 11:29 PM. |

https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/lxqt essentially mixing qt5(6) and gtk3. Arch Linux does not load up their kwin package such that it installs KDE Plasma so I know it is possible. The AUR has some alternative qt window managers but they are wip's. The CAD project has some commercial potential so I would prefer a stable system. |
