Odd mutt behaviour. Slow startup.
Hey, my mutt shows messages after 40 seconds after i type mutt command into terminal, but only when internet is connected. When there is not internet connected it starts instantly. No problem in linux. What am i missing?
Mutt version 1.13.5 OpenBSD 6.7 Im using mutt + procmail, fetchmail and msmtp. Thanks for help. |

In 6.7, using mutt, fetchmail/nmh for pop3 retrieval, no delays encountered.
Also with mutt's own imap retrieval and mh settings, no delays on my laptop. To trouble shoot, try running fetchmail manually. Last edited by shep; 22nd May 2020 at 01:01 AM. |

The only time I have issues with mutt (a hang/slow down) is due to loosing my connection to the router. I just do a /etc/netstart and all is well. It does not happen often, but maybe once every few days. Maybe check your connections when it happens, you could be getting hiccups.

I found that mutt slowdown is only there when my openvpn client is active. fetchmail manually fetch ok. What to do?

I see you all are using mutt and not neomutt. Is mutt better than neomutt?
I use neomutt with isync (mbsync) and msmtp and it works flawlessly. |

I moved to neomutt about 6 mo ago.
Took a bit to set-up ".neomuttrc" in /home/xxx directory, then setup printing from neomutt, then sidebar. No major issues other than learning the differences. Neomutt is suppossed to be better maintained with additional features that have not been updated in mutt. So far I like using neomutt with getmail from my pop3 google account. .... |

If you do not use the features previously provided by the patches, mutt should be a smaller footprint. |

I'm going to make a wild guess that you have a Reverse DNS timeout delay. See if https://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq8.html#RevDNS applies to your situation.

There are many options for DNS resolution.
https://www.techradar.com/news/best-dns-server Not mentioned is OpenNic https://www.opennic.org/ If the discussion goes beyond this post, it probably should be forked. |

I dont encounter problems when dnscrypt-proxy resolvers handles my DNS requests as well. Anyway my VPN provider fixed problem. Unfortunately he wont share what causes problem.
