Default Call for testing Xorg 7.5

Quote:
We’re happy to announce that Xorg 7.5 is ready
for public testing.

The ATI and Intel drivers were patched to work with
the new server, please report any problems to us!
The drivers for Vesa, NV and NVIDIA have been tested
thoroughfully and seem to work fine.

A note to FreeBSD 6.X users: Unfortunately you’ll have
to compile gcc 4.2+ first because the X.org Team doesn’t
support gcc 3.X longer, We strongly recommend you to
update your system to 7.x or above.

So if you want to see a rather smooth transition to Xorg 7.5, take some time and help them!

Damn, and I thought it was going to be a quiet weekend with my compiler... as soon as I've got the time to make packages for the current server, I'll give her a go.

There is no KMS or GEM in FreeBSD, so we cannot upgrade to the latest drivers. Anything later is useless in FreeBSD.

Do you know of any efforts to add KMS to the FreeBSD kernel? It looks like it is growing increasingly important.

Current Linux graphics stack is one big mess, and its propably hard (and sometimes pointless) to port that to FreeBSD, its not only GEM, there is also TTM ... and TTM with GEM internals ... there is also Mesa, and Gallium3D at the moment which is to replace Mesa ...

As You can see its total mess at the time as we speak.

Linux is not UNIX! Face it! It is not an insult. It is fact: GNU is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not UNIX”.

Indeed it is. Unfortunately, with newer Intel drivers being KMS-only, it will have to be tackled eventually. The best time to do it would probably be when Gallium3D and GEM have stabilized.

AFAIK Robert Noland is working on it, but he is the only one working on X!

@Oliver_H

This explains why we are so 'retarded' of it comes to newer x11 stuff (lack of people to work on this).

Sure we have a lack of people if it comes to developing and testing, but we have a plethora of them afterwards, complaining about the 'low-quality ports' ;-)
