Default getting gmail using only base?

Is there a way to get mail from gmail using only base packages?
I am getting my gmail in maildir format using the getmail package, but I was wondering if it could be done without extra packages?

To my knowledge, not in base. Gmail supports IMAP and POP3 for mail client connections. Gmail SMTP can be used to relay outbound mail.

(Yes, Gmail uses SMTP to transport mail to other mail servers, but that's not within the scope of your client-focused question. To receive mail from Gmail with SMTP can be done in base, but only by running a mail server.)

Posting again to say, if you want to run your own mail server, or even learn about what it would take...

Michael Lucas is publishing a book about it, and its in its final week on kickstarter. I'm supporting it. I'm sure to learn something new from him. He's a terrific writer, and makes complex technologies interesting, understandable, and fun.

The first email server I ever managed had about 100,000 users, and that was in the 1980s, pre-Internet. These days, I manage an email server with one user -- me.

Michael's kickstarter campaign ends tomorrow.

At the moment, it has reached enough goals that supporters are getting 5 (optionally 6) ebooks along with Run Your Own Mail Server: Networking for System Administrators, Ed Mastery, $ git commit murder, PAM Mastery, Sudo Mastery, and if wanted, access to his satirical Linux erotica novel, Savaged by Systemd, for which he's either famous or infamous.

There's still the possibility of getting SSH Mastery, too, if the campaign reaches the final goal.

Out of context but

one day a kid will see Michael's work and say "We are really standing on the shoulders of a giant".

Mr. Lucas said something similar in a zoomed version of a talk to NYCBUG, New York City BSD User Group. It's up at youtube. It's an hour and 23 minutes or so, and rather generalized, but he does speak about leaving something for the next generation to build on.

The talk he gave at BSDCAN (Canada) is also up there, it's a little shorter.
