Using a LiveCD to gather info

I'm about to install FreeBSD onto a Sony Vaio laptop. From what I've read looking around the Internet, I'm in for a challenge. Vaios aren't that *nix friendly.

The model is a Sony VGN-A297XP with a 17" screen. I can't really find any specifications for the screen online, so I thought it might be a good idea to use a live CD and see what that reports. I don't know if this is a good idea. Does a live CD generate a xorg.conf file? Does it matter if I use a FreeBSD live CD or can I just grab a Linux live CD?

Use Frenzy LiveCD, you will check both X11 and FreeBSD compatibility that way.

You can also try a custom KDE3 based FreBSD 6.4 liveCD from my mate: http://freebsd-live.org

I might try that instead since Frenzy still seems to be based on FreeBSD 6.3. I can't really find any information, but the packages-list contains documentation for 6.3.

No Live CDs based on 7.x?

PCBSD Seems to boot to LiveCD environment before install ( http://pcbsd.org ).

Ok. I ran into some problems using Frenzy. It seems my wireless needs some manual work. I thought I needed 7.x to get WPA-PSK working, but looking around it seems this was introduced in 6.2.

I'll do some more research using Frenzy and if that doesn''t work I'll give PCBSD a try. Thanks for your help!

DesktopBSD seems to be based on 7.x and includes a LiveCD option. I'll check that out.
