My D-Link DFE530TX ethernet adapter isnt found. Help!
Hello
In an older hardware setup (I dont remember the OpenBSD version) I used a D-Link DFE530TX REV-C1 10/100Mb ethernet adapter. It worked just fine and was recognized by OpenBSD as "vr0". But now when I install this adapter into my "new" server (OpenBSD v4.4) its not found. This is what the dmesg.boot looks like... Code:

Anyone who got an idea of how to fix this? If you find more things (from reading the dmesg.boot above) that I can fix easy, any help is welcome Thanks in advance /Quaxo |

First, make sure the card is properly seated.. I had a card that wasn't fully inserted and the product ID changed randomly.
If that doesn't help, try a different PCI slot... then, try a different card. As jggimi recommends, try -CURRENT first.. from the dmesg output, several issues which are apparent. Good luck, feel free to return with more questions.. Last edited by BSDfan666; 9th February 2009 at 05:05 PM. |

OK, ill try the -current then.
Hmm...I dont know where to start. http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq5.html#Flavors seems to have some info on this but its a lot to read. Any tips for me? /Quaxo |

As jggimi mentioned, just grab a snapshot kernel for a mirror.. rename the kernel and nove it into /, as bsd.cur for example.
ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/snapshots/i386/bsd (Permissions should be root:wheel, 0644.. or.. -rw-r--r--) jggimi explained this above, at the boot> prompt, type boot bsd.cur -s, see if the problem persists.. if it does, reboot and enter the UKC, boot bsd.cur -cs, disable apm or acpi, whichever was selected automatically the first time. |
|
|||
I downloaded the file, copyed it to / as bsd.cur and used "boot bsd.cur -cs" to enter UKC, and then typed "disable acpi" followed by "quit".
Wohoo! now I can see "vr0 at cpi1 dev 6 function 0 VIA VT6105 RhineIII ..." during boot up. However I cant use "ifconfig" for example or "cat /var/run/dmesg.boot", it seems im in some kind of default shell. Is there a way of making this new settings more permanent? /Quaxo |
|
||||
When you boot "-s" you end up in single-user mode. It is a root shell, with no environment variables set other than $TERM. Only the root partition "/" is mounted, and it is mounted read-only.
ifconfig is normally installed in /sbin, which is in the root partition. You should be able to use it. However, /var is usually a separate filesystem, and is not mounted. And your dmesg won't be in /var/run/dmesg.boot, as rc(8) is not run in single user mode. If you want to see your dmesg, issue the dmesg(8) command. To mount all of your automatically mounted filesystems from fstab(5), issue: # mount -a |
|
|||
I see. But does this mean that I have replaced the kernel? Or should I do something more to use -current instead of the kernel from v4.4?
/Quaxo |
|
|||
The kernel you just downloaded is 4.4-CURRENT(or 4.5-BETA), the fact that it's working is a good thing.. by the time 4.5 is released you'll be able to use it.
Using the 4.4-CURRENT(or 4.5-BETA) kernel with a user land from 4.4-RELEASE is not a good idea, as mentioned, the -s argument you passed at the boot prompt enabled single user mode.. going multiuser is definitely not recommended. You have a few options, upgrade to a snapshot.. which will require what's essentially a reinstall, or wait until 4.5 is released in May. Hope it helps.. again, feel free to post back if you need further assistance. |

So its not possible to just upgrade with -current then (as you can do when you go from 4.3 to 4.4 for example)? May is to far away for me to wait.
My router, an ol crapy D-Link, died in a power failure so I really need a working router now. My plan has always been to replace the D-Link with the OpenBSD server but I didnt plan to do it right now. So if I cant get this network adapter to work I must buy a new one /Quaxo |

Yes, obtain bsd.rd from the above ftp server, or.. a relatively synchronized mirror.. place it in / as previously instructed.
Once bsd.rd is booted, you can either install or upgrade.. like normal. (Remember to install the sets from the snapshot directory, not 4.4 or 4.5..)

If you read the general instructions here, this should get your planning started.
Note: upgrades do not automatically make changes to /etc and /var, these must be done manually. A review of the following -current FAQ, which lists all of the architectural changes to-date since 4.4-release, will let you know what needs doing. And .... the sysmerge(8) tool mentioned in that announcement will automate anything not covered by the binary upgrade. In general. You'll still want to inspect that FAQ just in case. |

This is normally true. However, at the initial -beta there is usually another package generation sequence executed for popular architectures. It takes a couple of days, but the "snapshot packages" at major mirrors will be in sync with -beta shortly. I saw mention of it in ports@ or misc@ today.
