Default open bsd 4.3 on intel board

Hello,
I am trying to get open bsd 4.3 to run on an intel dp35dp mobo w/q6600 proc and have had repeated problems with locking on me when I try to compile anything. I have updated the bios up with all but the last update, and that is next on the list to try. I called intel, and they advised I try a 965 chipset, though I have not found anything that specifically excludes the one I currently have. Any suggestions?

Without knowing anything more about the nature of the freezing, it is difficult to diagnose, but you may want to verify that the memory is good. Memtest86 is available free for download at the following;

is there any reason though that openbsd would not work on an intel platform?

You are really asking two questions.
  • Yes, it is possible to construct a non-standard motherboard utilizing an Intel CPU which is not recognized.
  • Is this the problem you are experiencing? I don't find mention of your motherboard on misc@, but this is not a definitive answer. Further searching indicates that this is yet another consumer motherboard marketed by Intel, so my guess is that it is not too exotic. Likewise, misc@ does indicate support for other quad-core Intel CPU's.
The fact that you say that freezing occurs during compiling indicates that OpenBSD has already been installed & must run at least to some degree if you are using a compiler.

So, here are two more questions & a suggestion:
  • Have you installed a different compiler or using the default?
  • Which kernel are you using?

I would suggest experimenting with booting /bsd.mp instead of /bsd. At the boot> prompt seen when booting the system, enter /bsd.mp. More information can be found in the boot(8) manpage as well as Section 14.6 of the FAQ:

"is there any reason though that openbsd would not work on an intel platform?"

Really? you stated that during compiling you are having problems, which part of that is an OpenBSD problem? you have failed to mention any real specifics about your hardware/software as well, just a general "how come" and a VERY general "Intel" statement.

More details may = more help

1) Where's your dmesg? That would show which kernel and which architecture you are running, as well as more details about your hardware which you have yet to provide.
2) How many hours did you run memtest86?
3) What do you mean by "locking on me" ?? e.g.: does this occur while running X on in console? If in console, can you switch to another console via keyboard? Can you log on remotely? Does the platform respond to pings?

A little information goes a long, long way, ddocksta. While nobody's perfect, please read http://daemonforums.org/showthread.php?t=596 for what we'd like to see.

Also, separate your issues- does the platform only experience problems when attempting to compile, or does it fail on a variety of other operations? If it fails only when attempting to compile, it's (imho) probably not a platform issue.

So as not to distract from previous advice, definitely give more details as to your woes, including your dmesg, and follow jggimi's link

There0, jggimi, & ai-danno, if you look at the OP's original posts, they are close to two months old. Unless the OP enabled email alerts, he's long gone...
