Links for softwares after install (kde, gnome, firefox)

Hi all,

Before yesterday, I search mirors for install softwares after installation, ex. desktops, Firefox, etc.
It's a problem because the ISO images are small, about 250MB, and contain only package for primary installation of NetBSD. No ISO with "pkg".
I think that the team is too busy to update mirors. Several have empty folders.
Have you experienced the same thing?

Not sure if this is what you want, but I grab stuff from http://ftp.NetBSD.org/pub/pkgsrc/pac.../i386/5.0/All/.

Notes:
(1) This does work with http as indicated (which I find preferable)

(2) Maybe using mirrors is better, but I'm on dial-up so it won't exactly saturate their bandwith

Personally I never use pkg. Building ALL my "favorite" apps, from the Gnome DE to image viewers, takes 1 day (P4 2.4 Ghz), however most of the time it spends on downloading sources.

If you want to install a lot of binary packages with pkg_add, you can edit root's .cshrc file and un-comment the line that sets the PKG_PATH. (that's the url that IdOp provided above that pkg_add uses to download the package(s).)
It's located about half-way down in the file. There's a comment above it talking about downloading binaries with pkg_add.

I begin to understand the problem. The community is missing persons for help the project.
The releases'mirrors aren't synchros. This is a big work.

Otherwise, for package base gnome has name change. Is "gnome-build-2.24.1.tgz" the base package for NetBSD 4.0 and next?

I see also the similarity between NetBSD and OpenBSD.
I think that OpenBSD have better means for work.
I know also problem to install the OS and the packages with one of my two optical drive : some tests as cd0a and cd1a have completely lock the system. I must use the sweet method of poweroff computer.

Hi,

Looking trough the pkgsrc tree I see some changes in gnome packages since I've last instaled it, but for the base installation should work gnome-session.

Probably you will also make use of gnome-menus and (don't know for sure it's necessary) py-gnome-menus.

Of course You need also all dependencies .

Meta-package Gnome includes not only base packages but also lot of applications like web-browser etc. It's good while You are using gnome-like application, if not I would go only with bases.

Thanks for all, particurlarly Bobarino, because I've forgot thank you in my previous posts.
Now, I ask to you an important question : actually, the release better updated is 4.0X.
Details :
-ISO : 4.0 and 4.01
-packages : only 4.0
Do I must choice the same version for install (ISO) and packages?
Is it critical to install with ISO 4.01 and pkg_add with 4.0?
I think that 4.01 coutains only security issues.
(Perhaps, the version 4.01 will be near available.)

First of all I would install 5.0.1. It's a huge diffrence between 4 and 5 release, for example it's a way more faster. They did a great job with new netbsd.

About packages...
You are right, the only diffrence between x.0.1 and x.0 release are critical/security updates. So you are free to use pkg prepared for x.0.

Working link to pkg for netbsd 5.0 was given before by IdOp.

ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/pack.../i386/5.0/All/

However it's not the latest pkgsrc-2009Q2 branch. On the other hand applications version doesn't differ so much.

That I've ask is link for pkg_add, not pkg_src.
I'm beginner and I think that pkg_src is the tool for installation by source code, that means compilation (make, make intall).
Is this true?
Is the link given by IdOp OK to install binaries packages?

It worked for me, even with http: in front. You can put it in your PKG_PATH if you want.

PS : I've problem for install 4.0 : for create complete disklabel, no other primaries partitions is needed. This is done. Next, problems with sysint for optical dives and checking (fsck_...) NetBSD slice (dev/rwd1a). This evening, I'v'e will "re'begin" with the deleting of the slice (not difficult), but for the optical drive, this is other thing!

I try several mirrors.
