Question T430 makes unusual sound after premature termination of installation process.

Hi All

As explained in the title, I just received shipment of my "new" T430. Attempting to install OpenBSD, I forgot that I prefer to have ethernet plugged in when I do this (this is the installation procedure I 'know', so I risked terminating the installation procedure to move the computer to where I could plug it in. It warns that you should not do this "might leave your computer in an inconsistent state", but doesn't give any indication, from what I can tell, as to how one is supposed to terminate this process once started.

On re-start, with ethernet connected, it now makes a noise, as of a hard-drive or fan wiring away. It did not do this before, as far as I can tell. It was very quiet.

Is this normal? Is it indicative of the computer gradually heating up with use, or did I break something by exiting the installation procedure? The computer is still under warranty, I can bring it back to have it looked at, but it's a fair distance away.

Michael..

I would suggest re starting with a new install, including giving it a new MBR or GPT table.

I terminated the installation procedure very early on. It was still collecting basic information, hadn't, I don't think, had time to actually -do- anything yet. I have personally concluded that the computer was simply shipped with a faulty fan that happened to fail almost immediately. I mean, this is a T430. Not exactly new. That said, it would be very helpful if the installation instructions were clear about how the installation procedure can be terminated for cases such as mine.

..I realize actually, that this whole thing sounds strange. Why should I have to terminate the whole process just to put in an ethernet cable? Answer: my other two laptops have no batteries in them. (I'm not -that- mobile) So I've taken to doing "clean shut-downs" whenever I need to go anywhere to plug-in again. (so call them half-laptops). This being a "new" T430, this shouldn't be an issue. I just haven't gotten used, yet, to having a computer that should, in principle, actually work the way it is supposed to.

I think this is what you should do, (but I just switch off if I need to abort).

kill ^U

I owned a T430 lenovo and it is a good OpenBsd performer. FYI, you can attach a smart phone for using "usb" teather-ing " usb to phone or, use "Ethernet teather-ing", usb phone to ethernet socket If you have an rj45 to usb cable. OpenBsd will recognize either one. That way you don't have to run around looking for an ethernet socket or wifi setup. I always keep the ethernet cable available even though your smart phone to usb should have come with the ph. Just go into your phones usb menu selections and you will see these options.

Concerning the above member comments I would as stated, simply power off and reboot with install disc inserted and usb teathe-ring or ethernet teather-ing enabled. Play around with this until you find a solution that works best for you.

If you have issues after trying this procedure, those here should have additional comments.
Unless you are in a hi temp location i doubt overheating is the cause of the fan noise speed etc.
My T430 worked fine here in Texas

On older machines and external devices i have experienced fan noise, in my situation some devces just needed runtime, or very light lubrication. That said some or most fans and other rotating mechanisms within electronic devices are constructed with sealed bearings and cannot be lubricated. Many times cleaning with compressed air fans and heat sink passages reduce unit temperatures. In addition on larger machines cpu higher temps might bve reduced by resealing the cpu to heat sink with new cpu/ht sink paste.

Good luck with your " world needs saving project", as yes it does need improvement.

Thanks for the fascinating ideas! I have indeed seen mentions that one can lubricate the fan. Generally, some searching around informed me that this noise is "part of the thinkpad experience", with most recommendations pointing to swapping out the toshiba for an athena, then using tpfancontrol. For now, I'm content knowing I didn't break anything. When the fan starts up, when it starts to irritate me, I just close the machine. That's the extent to which I'm still learning the system. You will see my other post about crystal. Time is not on our side, the world needs saving. Customized desktops will have to wait..

On a T430 I have, I thoroughly cleaned the fan and re-pasted.

The fan still makes a somewhat high pitched noise when running, I think we have to live with it If it was a low pitched noise I would not mind it.
