Default Call for backdoor in wake of Pensacola shooting

A senior Justice Department official on Friday said he saw an increasing willingness on Capitol Hill to pass legislation requiring tech companies to make their encrypted devices accessible to law enforcement, saying “the ground is as fertile as ever” for such action.

Assistant Attorney General John Demers declined to disclose “how far along we are on a decision to seek legislation” but leaned forward on the issue.

“I’ve never seen the atmosphere here in D.C. to be so conducive to passing some kind of encryption legislation or lawful access legislation as it is today,” Demers said during a discussion at the Wilson Center.

Then there's the political aspect, which again has rough parallels.

"In both cases it seems clear that the Department of Justice is trying to identity the most politically advantageous case in which to press a longstanding desire, which is that companies reengineer their products to allow easy surveillance," says Ben Wizner, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project.

Full disclosure: I am not US citizen.
I have interested in this because UE uses a lot of software and hardware designed in USA.

Going dark: encryption and law enforcement

UPDATE, 05/22/2020: In the advent of the EARN IT Act, the debate on government subversion of encryption has reignited. Given that the material conditions of the technology have not changed, and the arguments given in favor of the bill are not novel, we’ve decided to republish the following blog outlining our stance on the subject.
