installing linux on freeBSD

Hey everybody,

I have a laptop that only has FreeBSD with BIOS version "IBM - 1" which was last updated 11/30/99. I would like to replace FreeBSD with Ubuntu, and I already burned an install CD, but I am having problems figuring out how to instruct the boot loader to boot from the CD.

I am new to this and would greatly appreciate any assistance,

This varies from BIOS to BIOS. Are you getting to your BIOS 'setup' screen? If not, check your owner manual or google for your laptop manufacturer and model to get said manual. (At boot time you might even see something like "Press F1 to enter setup".)

Once you've reached your BIOS setup screen, there is an option or tab that will read "Boot" or "Boot Order" or something to that effect. Re-order your boot devices such that CD drive appears before hard drive. You should be all set....

What anomie suggested is one option. Another is that some laptops give you a boot device list, normally by pressing one of the function keys. Here, you can pick what you want to boot from.

You should also prepare the floppy version of super grub disk, in case your laptop lacks the option to boot off CD's (common thing with ancient PC's running ancient BIOS's).
