Startx executes as root, "startx:not found" as user
I am not even able to start the X server as root through su.
Using /usr/X11R7/bin/startx produces a repeat of "xauth: not found." Directory /usr/X11R6/bin is empty. How do I link $USER to xauth? Copying .profile from root to user does not work.

Okay
I've changed the shell and now root's information comes up. X tries to start but hangs due to permissions.

Not sure I had the exact same problem, but similar. Part of the solution was to make sure X11R7 went into the appropriate PATH components rather than X11R6.

Yeah, I had similar issue and fixed it by copying the PATH contents from root user to my regular user.
