can't get into the server

Hi

As a few of you know I got bit by the cc bug when upgrading to 7.1-PRERELEASE.

I then ran sysinstall and downloaded the 7.0-RELEASE code and installed it. The installation went all perfect and I rebooted the server.
Not the best idea I had but hey I had to try something.

Any ways, now I can't ssh into the server. I get the ssh prompt asking me for my password but it doesn't want to accept it. I even asked my ISP to reset the root password and enable root login in the sshd_config file but I still only get the password screen and it keeps telling me that my password is wrong. They even created a normal user and the same thing happens

Here is an example

Anyone out there that have an idea of how I can get back into the system without flying out to Germany to fix the problem.

woot I'm back in, I can login again.

The fix was to run

cap_mkdb /etc/login.conf

sysinstall whipped off all the old user accounts.

why were you using sysinstall for an upgrade anyway ?

I didn't use it to upgrade, I did the good old way of make buildworld and all that, but I got bit with the 7.1-PRERELEASE thingy and then I ran sysinstall to go back to 7.0-RELEASE.

Like I said above, not one of my finest moments, but I now have the server back and recompiling the ports.

Trust me I'm not going to that again soon. But I found it a good way to get the system reverted to its original state like the day you installed it.

For future reference:
You don't need to use sysinstall for that either, you can download the various distributions from:
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/re...6/7.0-RELEASE/

And use the install.sh script.
