I'm trying to install FreeBSD 7 onto a 1TB Seagate SATA disk. When I reach the FDISK part it complains about the geometry being wrong. FDISK reports using 121601/255/63. I've tried to find out the correct numbers from a Seagate datasheet, but I'm not sure which numbers to use. specs are at page 10, model ST31000340AS.
From what I read, I thought it should be 16383/16/63, but that results in FDISK reporting 16 514 064 sectors total and 8063 MB. According to the datasheet it should be 1 953 525 168 total, right? Can anyone please help? |

I got it working eventually. The thing that threw me off was that I kept getting the message over and over again. Choosing entire disk - Warning. Setting bootable - Warning. Writing the slices - Warning. I'm used to getting the warning just once and then keep going. After clicking "Ok" to all of the warnings, everything installed fine.
From within the system, I now get for FDISK ad0: cylinders=1938021, heads=16, sectors/track=63 and a total of 1953520002 (953867 Meg). I guess it won't go much higher for a 1TB disk? It's never gonna come to the same figure as in the datasheet (1953525168), right? |

That warning is technically correct, but redundant. I think it has to do with the way disks remap themselves these days.
Ignore the warning. It's noise.
