Default Your NetBSD Screenshot

Well, the other BSD's have a thread like this, so ...

Here's mine. Fluxbox made to look nice and boring. xterms, tmux, xload, xconsole, lynx and firefox iconified.

Yay! I'm famous!

But yeah, there aren't that many NetBSD users here, but those showing up might appreciate it.

Default NetBSD/i386

Here is my current desktop: picasaweb.google.com/classicmanpro/XfceOnNetBSDI386 ... Starting with November 2010, NetBSD is my main operating system (no more dual boot) and I even bought a new computer in anticipation of 5.1 ...

PS: Sorry for posting a link like this but I don't have enough rights to post a hyperlink ... I need at least 5 posts to become a full-fledged "Daemon Forums" citizen.

Here's the latest on NetBSD 8.0_STABLE, 8 years after starting this thread. Fluxbox with "everything" iconified.

I'd love to give credit for the wallpaper, but it was found "somewhere on the Internet" and I no longer have the link. I did edit it significantly with gimp to switch parts of it to darkslategray.

Your setup hasn't changed very much in those eight years. What's that clock below xload? It almost looks like a terminal window with a scrollbar on the left.

I know, I'm kind of resistant to change. But sometimes I do use NetBSD to experiment with changes a bit, such as adding the wallpaper. Another "major" change was having ~ in my shell prompt instead of "/home/userid", lol.

It's actually an xmessage window, indeed with a scrollbar. I have a shell alias to set an alarm, which beeps twice. Under X it puts up the window with the alarm time so I know when it will beep, or after it beeps when it did. The message stays up for 10 minutes after the alarm. It helps tear me away from the computer to do other things.

That's approaching Chuck Norris levels of badassnes! Bonus points for adding a wallpaper. That clearly demonstrates you're not afraid to push the envelope.

Cool idea. Though, if you struggle getting away from the pc, you could always take the fait accompli route and have the machine shut down automatically instead of just beeping.

All joking aside, your older screenshot in its simplicity reminded me a bit of this:
https://www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/screen.jpeg
That's a screenshot of Donald Knuth's FVWM setup. No-nonsense and to the point, nothing wrong with that.

Lol, I enjoyed the humour and the Knuth screenshot.

I guess one could always ditch the window manager, fill the screen with emacs, and do everything in there? Err, well, maybe not.

Thanks very much for your kind words. The wallpaper is a generic one I found in a twm theme (http://www.custompc.plus.com/twm/walls/HP3.jpg), to which I simply added our beastie friend as he seemed to sit on the ledge nicely. The window manager is JWM with a theme by Christian Bettinger

Unfortunately I've left my conky config behind on a hard disk no longer in this machine since I did an upgrade to NetBSD 8. But it was quite simple, nothing clever in it.

I've been making a number of changes to my desktop, will post another shot when it is done.

Oh, I 've always loved JWM! Very neat, well-designed and consistent piece of software. Puppy Linux brings JWM close to perfection

Your shot raised my curiosirty, so I decided to take my chance to create a status bar with conky too (see below)

Same here, decided to give a reshape to mine using the half life logo as source of inspiration, and here's the result

Default Greetings and screenshot

I am using NetBSD since NetBSD 6.0, and I am enjoying it greatly. Already a follower of this forum for years. Yesterday I revived an old desktop, hp compaq dc 7100, with NetBSD 8.1. With this screenshot I want to greet you all. I am not a tinkerer, I am just a simple user. I don't think I can ad much to this forum except my support for all that you are doing. Great thanks to the developers of the BSD's

Welcome to the forum, and thanks for posting! It looks like you are using fluxbox? I like your wallpaper, in that, while it's not monochromatic it doesn't contain a lot of visual distraction either. Cheers.

Hi, and welcome! I'm by no means an expert nor a professional either, just a devoted amateur, and I like experimenting BSDs and their features, especially NetBSD. Personally I don't mind contributing on fora, mailing lists or newsgroups whenever I notice I have some hint, or a fix/workaround ready which OP most likely ignores, providing a discrete amount of my replies has proven worth and useful so far

I like your setup: fluxbox and xmms are great defaults and conky always comes in handy. I'm with ld0p endorsing your wallpaper choice too :P
Which font is that you're using?

That said, just got a second-hand laptop in very good shape from a friend who gave it away in favour of more powerful hardware; put the newly branched NetBSD 9 on it and set up a simple desktop with wmx. The info bar on the bottom is conky, while notifications are provided by dunst. Font is Office Code Pro
